Naturalization after only 5 years of legal residence

Since June 2024, you can be naturalized after 5 years of legal residence, instead of the previous 8 years.

You may no longer apply for Naturalization with the following residence permits: Sections 16a, 16b, 16d, 16e, 16f, 17, 18f, 19, 19b, 19e, 20, 22, 23a, 24, 25 (3) to (5) and Section 104c AufenthG.

Permission for dual citizenship

Since the new Naturalization Act of June 2024, you have the option of dual citizenship. Previously, many applicants had to give up their previous citizenship in accordance with Section 10 (1) No. 4 StAG in order to obtain German citizenship. With the new Naturalization Act, this is no longer necessary.

The exceptions under Section 12 StAG no longer apply to you. If your home country recognizes multiple citizenship, you can have two or even several citizenships with your Naturalization in Germany.

Relief for the guest worker generation

The new Naturalization Act of 2024 provides for special relief for the guest and contract worker generation who have lived in Germany for decades and came to the FRG or the former GDR as guest workers. The German government wants to thank this group for their commitment and support their integration in Germany.

These innovations include simplified language requirements. Oral language skills at A1 level are sufficient and you no longer have to present a formal language certificate. You also no longer have to take the naturalization test.

German citizenship for children

  • the children were born in Germany,
  • one parent has been living legally in Germany for 5 years
  • and has an indefinite right of residence,

your children will automatically receive German citizenship.

More applications for Naturalization - longer waiting times

Due to the simplified regulations, the number of applications for Naturalization has risen sharply. This has led to an overload at the relevant authorities, which in turn has delayed the processing of applications. The authorities do not have sufficient resources to process so many naturalization applications at the same time.

The processing time for your naturalization application could be extended. This can be frustrating, especially if you are dependent on German citizenship to obtain certain rights and privileges. In the chart below you can see how long Naturalization currently takes in different cities:

In this chart you can see the duration of Naturalization at the various immigration authorities in Germany with a map of Germany and the respective cities
While Naturalization works quickly in Cottbus and Berlin, Leipzig takes the longest at over 50 months.
