Naturalization after only 5 years of legal residence
Since June 2024, you can be naturalized after 5 years of legal residence, instead of the previous 8 years.
You may no longer apply for Naturalization with the following residence permits: Sections 16a, 16b, 16d, 16e, 16f, 17, 18f, 19, 19b, 19e, 20, 22, 23a, 24, 25 (3) to (5) and Section 104c AufenthG.
Permission for dual citizenship
Since the new Naturalization Act of June 2024, you have the option of dual citizenship. Previously, many applicants had to give up their previous citizenship in accordance with Section 10 (1) No. 4 StAG in order to obtain German citizenship. With the new Naturalization Act, this is no longer necessary.
The exceptions under Section 12 StAG no longer apply to you. If your home country recognizes multiple citizenship, you can have two or even several citizenships with your Naturalization in Germany.
Relief for the guest worker generation
The new Naturalization Act of 2024 provides for special relief for the guest and contract worker generation who have lived in Germany for decades and came to the FRG or the former GDR as guest workers. The German government wants to thank this group for their commitment and support their integration in Germany.
These innovations include simplified language requirements. Oral language skills at A1 level are sufficient and you no longer have to present a formal language certificate. You also no longer have to take the naturalization test.
