New consulate in the former embassy building
The Consulate General is located in the former Syrian embassy building in Bonn's government district near the Rheinaue park. The building had not been used for years. In January, it was announced that the Syrian government plans to use the building as a consulate in the future.
According to several media reports, the new Consulate General is intended to relieve the burden on the embassy in Berlin. Following the end of the civil war in Syria in December 2024, demand for consular services has risen significantly, particularly for passports and other identity documents. The consulate in Bonn will take over some of these tasks in the future.
Following renewed fighting in Syria, the Left Party is calling for a nationwide halt to deportations. However, the federal government is currently pursuing a stricter course. How realistic is a halt to deportations—and what currently applies to Syrian refugees?
New contact point for Syrians in Germany
Bonn is one of the centers of the Syrian community in Germany. By 2022, around 10,000 Syrian nationals were already living there. Across North Rhine-Westphalia, the figure was around 288,000 in 2024.
For many of them, the new Consulate General will significantly shorten the distance to consular services. At the same time, it will also provide an additional point of contact for Syrians from other federal states.
The Consulate General in Bonn is one of three Syrian diplomatic missions in Germany, alongside the Embassy in Berlin and another consulate in Bremen.
Embassies generally perform diplomatic tasks between countries. Consulates general, on the other hand, focus on consular services. These include providing support to their own citizens, issuing passports and visas, and other administrative matters.
