"In Hamburg, the naturalization authority requires applicants to have worked for the same employer for at least 18 months without interruption. This requirement is not enshrined in law, but in practice it is seen as an indicator of professional stability. Anyone who has changed jobs frequently or is self-employed should document particularly carefully how their livelihood has been secured on a permanent basis."

This is how Naturalization works in Cologne

Naturalization in Cologne follows clearly defined steps that you must go through carefully. In the following graphic you will find an overview of the individual steps of the procedure - from the organization of the documents to the ceremonial receipt of the naturalization certificate.

💶 You can expect to pay these costs to the naturalization authority

The route to Naturalization involves various costs that must be paid by the applicant. These costs can vary depending on the applicant's origin and financial circumstances.

The following fees apply for the application for German citizenship:

  • 255 € per adult person,
  • 51 per child under the age of 18 who is naturalized together with their parents, and
  • 255 per child who is naturalized without their parents.
Good to know:

Minors aged 16 to 18 pay only €51 if they are naturalized with their parents. However, different requirements apply for children under the age of 16. These include, for example, a signed declaration of loyalty.

If you have already submitted your naturalization application and resubmit it online, you will have to pay the fees twice. A refund of the fee already paid is not possible.

There are various circumstances in which the naturalization authority has the option of reducing or waiving fees altogether. Such reductions are granted particularly in cases of financial hardship to ensure that the naturalization process remains accessible to all.

Fee reductions and exemptions can be applied for on factual or personal grounds. The authorities will examine your request at their own discretion. A reduction or exemption of the naturalization fees is therefore a discretionary decision for reasons of hardship.
